Luke 13:31-35 <- Click to read now
At this moment in Scripture, we see the finality of rejecting Jesus. All the way through this point, Jesus continued to reach out to draw people to God. In this passage, he made a statement that time has run out. Their rejection has caused irrevocable harm, and they wouldn’t figure out just how deep those wounds were until and unless they truly believed in Jesus.
Catastrophe would strike, all because they rejected Jesus. He was about to face death. His daily miracles pointing to God’s grace were coming to a close, and within 40 years the city would even be destroyed.
One of the most encouraging things I can say, and will continue to say, is God knew this was going to happen; but He still sent Jesus. Catastrophe still strikes today, but Jesus came for us, too. Believing in Jesus doesn’t keep these difficulties from happening in our lives, but we have a hope within us that far outshines anything else.
We might not be actively rejecting Jesus, but perhaps you know someone who does reject him today. Would you simply pray for that person? Pray God shines His blessings upon them, and pray God shows His presence to them through Jesus. Pray also that God might work through you to be a witness for Jesus, to shine the light of Christ, and to express the love that God has offered us. Let’s pray.
Almighty God, Your presence and power are evident to us; we can’t imagine life without knowing and believing in You. But we know so many around us don’t understand Your love, Your gift of salvation, Your majesty in all creation, and we know people reject Jesus for a whole host of reasons. We ask for Your truth to be made apparent in their lives. Help them to truly know Your love. Work within us, encourage us, and strengthen us to share this truth in the ways we can. We ask this to bring You glory, and we ask this for others because we know the difference Jesus makes in lives every day. Amen.
