John 18:28-38 <- Click to read now

In this passage, we find more deceit from these religious leaders. They have decided Jesus is worthy of death, and they want someone else to do the deed of killing him. It’s interesting they don’t want to go into Pilate’s dwelling because it would “defile” them, but they defiled themselves whole-heartedly before they even made the trip to see Pilate.

When they sought Pilate for Jesus’ execution, it caused Pilate to reevaluate just exactly what was going on. That’s surprising, because from what I have heard, the Romans didn’t mind crucifying some of their enemies to keep the rest in line. In this case, Pilate wanted to do everything he could to keep this from escalating to a crucifixion. The results of this are in the readings ahead, but for now, let’s continue to pray for God’s grace and mercy to be known.

Lord, thank You for Jesus. Thank You for the chance to know him more, and the gift of knowing You more because of what Jesus has done for us. Help us to continue to shine the light of Christ and to make known the Gospel message. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
