Mark 6:1-6a <- Click to read now
Those who saw Jesus grow up among them couldn’t wrap their minds around the fact that he was giving solid Scriptural teaching, performing miracles, and even healing people. Maybe they thought Jesus doing these kinds of things was, “too good to be true.” It seems like that phrase has been around for a very long time. What is it about witnessing something amazing, especially from someone we personally know, that causes us to question its validity? Is it because we know better? Is it because we’ve experienced the contrary with someone else, or even with that person?
We have our own struggles with this in today’s context, but those who saw Jesus grow up sure seemed to have a struggle with this in the worst way I can imagine. Because of their rejection towards the possibility of Jesus being who Jesus is, they missed the experience of a lifetime. More than that, they missed the greatest experience of anyone’s lifetime, because they were right there beside God the Son.
This passage tells us Jesus was amazed at their unbelief. May we be a people that amaze because of our belief. “Almighty God, as we strive to know Jesus more and more, help us to live with rock-solid faith. Nothing is too good to be true with You, and we know Your promises are faithful and true. We know Your power is greater than anything else we can possibly fathom. We ask You to guide us in pointing others out to Your power, Your promises, and Your plan of salvation through our Savior. We lift this in His name; Amen.”
