Mark 3:20-21, 31-35 <- Click to read now

It’s one thing to be rejected by those you grew up with.  It’s quite another when it involves family.  As Jesus began to spend more time in ministry, his family saw something that didn’t settle well with them.  I’m sure before Jesus began his ministry, they were used to certain activities and involvement.  These activities didn’t involve debates with religious leaders or spending every waking moment with strangers.  Now they did.

As we read through the passage, do you suppose his family was trying to “save Jesus from himself,” or were they worried about the kind of pushback this would cause for Jesus and those he knew (or in this case, those he was related to)?

In any case, without seeing the bigger picture of just exactly who Jesus is, his family was showing their disapproval of this kind of involvement.  When it all boils down, they were rejecting who this Jesus was, in favor of the Jesus they expected him to be.

It does us well to accept Jesus for who he is, and not try to make him into what we want him to be. I don’t need to get into the nuts and bolts of that statement right now, because I’m sure we can all recall how we’ve tried to fit Jesus into one particular mold or another.  Let’s see him as who he is; our Savior and our Lord, and let’s follow him in such a way that we are truly his family who know him more with each passing day.

Lord, help us to know Jesus more, and help us to understand the depths of following him.  May we always listen to him, may we learn from him, and may be a part of responding to his words.  We pray we can bring You glory through the way we do this.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.
